Uli Westphal’s Mutatoes

marketflyer.jpg

By far the most common genetically modified (GM) organisms are crop plants. But the technology has now been applied to almost all forms of life, from pigs bearing spinach genes to goats that produce spider silk. Still, there are many among us who are still ignorant of the fact genetically modified diets do a whole lot of harm. This could mean that in the end, all our food crops could contain a proportion of genetically-modified elements, leaving biological extinctions in many life forms. Here, Uli Westphal’s interesting photographic project: Mutatoes ( a collection of non-standard fruits, roots and vegetables found at Berlins Super-and Farmers Markets), explores the last remaining survivors of biological variety.

These rare looking foods documented by Uli may look unpalatable and non-real to many of you out there. Yet, there’s a great deal of irony here; your actually looking at the real thing, something that would genuinely taste delicious too.

Yoji Ishii`s piece “Germination” sprouts a little green stalk from an earthy
chocolate bean. From the Chocolate exhibition.

The American cartoonist John G. Tullius once said, ‘Nine out of ten people like chocolate. The tenth person always lies.’

I think chocolate is a wondrous food, one with which everyone is familiar. But it goes beyond being merely a food … it shows its face in every aspect of our lives. What would happen if we were to embrace the world through that already shared feeling is what we’re trying to find out with this exhibition. Naturally, works of chocolate itself will be involved but it’s not just about that. It’s about seeing the world through chocolate—together. ~ from The Little Book of Chocolate, Brockhampton Press, 1996, p.32

These exquisite chocolate sculptures were shown at the “Chocolate exhibition” at the new 21_21 Design Sight space in Tokyo. It was planned and executed under the direction of Naoto Fukasawa a product designer and one of the 21_21 directors. The subject matter of the first exhibition is “chocolate”, something with which everyone is familiar and yet here, nothing more than a springboard for expressing design points of view. Here, Naoto Fukasawa and some 30 creative individuals and groups presented surprising visions that responded to the word “chocolate” and its bittersweet nature. The 70 or so works on display span a wide range of media, including installation, video, photographs and sculpture. My favorite piece being the “chocolate heart”, delicious!
