Stephane Halleux’s Curious Creations

Stephane Halleux, a French sculptor is the creator of a remarkable collection of steampunkish characters, engines, vehicles and very curious creatures. He makes the most amazing anthropomorphised creations, most of which is cyborganic in nature, existing in an interzone between man and machine, all rendered in a decidedly retro-futuristic flavor.
Most of Halleux’s models are constructed and detailed from various media (see above), all sharing a cartoonish steampunk vibe that’s really appealing. Sadly, Stephane Halleux’s site was is 100% Flash, so no linking to specific favorites. However, I have kindly organized [15] more of Stephane’s fabulous creations, for your viewing pleasure.

Hmm… why is it that I’m reminded of Studio Ghibli when I look at these images?
November 7th, 2007 at 8:25 am
@fuubi - Interesting…I personally don’t see anything “anime” or studio ghibil related in Halleux’s models, could you expand on that?
November 7th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
Fuubi refers to the movie “Howls moving castle” I think.
Talking about Ghibli the movie “Nausicaa” style of drawing and colours looks very much like the work of the french comics author Jean Giraud (Moebius)

I can see what fuubi means. I’m not sure why, but these pieces also remind me of Studio Ghibli’s work. Perhaps it’s the similarity to airships, robots, constructs and creatures that show up in films like Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds, Porco Rosso, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, and others. Perhaps it’s just a similar feeling of surreality. In any case, I like them!

@zorglub - I’ve not seen the movie “Howls moving castle”, will check that out at some point.
@Eirewolf - am with you on the surreality aspect..It’s been along time since I saw any Studio Ghibli’s work. There could well be certain connections there..
@Zorglub - That’s another interesting connection,am with you on the Jean Giraud (Moebius) cartoon influence. I see alot of striking similarities there.

Does anyone else see a resemblance to Tim Burton movies? I’m getting a definite Nightmare Before Christmas/Corpse Bride vibe from these.
March 21st, 2008 at 1:38 am
Yes! Tim Burton was the first thing that popped into my head. I wonder if the have worked with each other, otherwise they definetly should.
